About Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minnesota is home to not only the popular Lake Calhoun, Lake of Isles and Lake Harriet but many other beautiful water ways as well.  The city is abundantly rich in water with twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi riverfront, creeks and waterfalls– many of which are connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway.  Its residents enjoy 120 kilometers (75 miles) of pedestrian, bike, and skate trails.  Minneapolis has over 180 parks, comprising 16.6% of the city.  This comes out to roughly 770 square feet of parkland for each resident, said to be the most parkland per resident among cities of similar population densities.

The Twin Cities area also hosts the world famous Mall of America, also called MOA, which is the second largest mall in North America covering 4,200,000 square feet or 96.4 acres enough to fit seven Yankee Stadiums inside.  If you cannot find exactly what you are looking for here, most likely you won’t find it anywhere.  Minneapolis is well known for its diverse and in-depth art culture.  With places such as the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the popular Walker Art Center, it’s an art connoisseur’s dream city.  Minneapolis is second only to New York for the most live theater seats per capita in the U.S.  We can’t forget the sport fans!  Mpls is home to the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Viking’s (go purple pride!), the Minnesota Wild, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Lynx.

The city lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river’s confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state’s capital.  Known as the Twin Cities, St. Paul and Minneapolis form the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States, with about 3.2 million residents.  Minneapolis was once the world’s flour milling capital, as well as a hub for timber.  Today it’s the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle.  According to a survey taken by Central Connecticut State University, Minneapolis is the most literate city in the United States.  The community’s diverse population also has a long tradition of charitable support through progressive public social programs in addition to private and corporate philanthropy.

Homes for sale in Minneapolis can range from under $20,000 for foreclosed fixer type properties to well into the millions.  Whether it’s a condo, townhome, modest single family home or as grand as the Van Dusen Mansion in Minneapolis (shown left) there is something for everyone here.

The name Minneapolis is attributed to the city’s first schoolmaster, who combined “mini”, the Dakota word for water, and “polis,” the Greek word for city.  Minneapolis is nicknamed the “City of Lakes” and “Mill City.”  In addition to being a great place to live, the Minneapolis real estate market has also become a popular choice among buyers due to the excellent educational institutions such as Minneapolis Community & Technical College, Dunwoody College of Technology, Globe University & Minnesota School of Business, as well as top art schools and many others. It’s no wonder many home buyers seek property in the Minneapolis area.  Contact a Minneapolis Realtor now.
