Is The Media To Blame

January 30, 2009 //  by Derrick Monroe

Can the media really impact the economy in a positive way or negative for the world? I have been hearing for years in casual conversations with people “well that’s what they say”, who is “they” anyway? The “they” is the media. In part the answer is right there.

The media is the most common source if not the only source used for information by most of us. Television, radio and the internet provide the 24 hour flow of information right at our fingertips but does that really mean an impact for the economy?

If a talk show host can simply mention a name of a book and it becomes an overnight #1 seller did the media have an effect or was it simple coincidence? If the media commercials suggest what we wear, eat, and think is beauty are they successful in their campaign?

I sometimes think the media 24 hour news channels spend too much time discussing the negative news and the falling sky syndrome. Now I would not suggest that we all hide our heads in the sand and I get the fact we need to know and understand the world and economic standings but do we really need to beat it to death all day and night.

Why do we not hear the good news? Even today we see some areas with the un-employment rate going down, some job demands going up and the real estate market has many areas that are now maintaining and even on the rise along with new businesses opening and some businesses so busy they are adding additional work force.

Now I am not saying or implying there are not tragedies out there and many areas in bad shape, I am merely asking why does the media not help out to spread some good news that may boost consumer confidence?

With our new leader in the White House part of what I was hearing is that we all need to get up, brush ourselves off and do what we can to help boost us back up, is the media not part of that platform?

I am not 100% convinced either way but felt it was a good topic to seek other opinions and point of views. What do you think, if the media was to at least add more of the good news in their broadcasts would it be helpful to hear or is as simple as “just choose not to listen if it bothers you” situation, share your thoughts.
