Rockford Area Schools – A Tradition of Excellence One Student at a Time
Rockford Area Schools provides quality services and support for life-long learning opportunities. Helping every student be successful is the heart of the mission of educating students for life at Rockford Area Schools.
Projects at the high school include auditorium updates, a renovated multipurpose synthetic turf field and eight-lane track, and an expanded and enhanced Rocket Power strength training facility at the Rockford Community Center. Other projects underway include a lighted multi-field softball complex, lighted varsity baseball field and stadium, upgrades to the music facilities, soccer field upgrades with lighting, locker room upgrades, a new cafeteria/concession/nutrition services area, and a new school store. At the middle school complex, completed projects include window and exterior door replacements, boiler upgrades, and a new gymnastics gym with the addition of an in-ground foam pit, single bar trainer, and tumble track and rod floor. The elementary school projects include an expanded front parking lot, the addition of a backup boiler, upgrades to the front entrance, competition and tournament ready tennis courts and window replacements. In technology, district projects have included a network infrastructure upgrade, a campus wide wireless network and other network related service improvements and upgrades to the stadium sound system. These projects will enhance and expand learning and extra-curricular opportunities and will also provide updated technology for the digital world that we live in. All of the projects will prepare and equip our district facilities to effectively serve our students and surrounding communities for many years.
Rockford Elementary Arts Magnet School is in its 11th year as an arts magnet school for grades Kindergarten through grade 4. Students enjoy a standards-based curricula that provides the opportunity for creative expression, critical thinking, self-confidence, communication skills, appreciation of the arts, and multi-cultural experiences through the artistic disciplines (dance, drama, diversity, music, visual and media arts). The arts are infused into the core curriculum—reading, language arts, spelling, math, social studies and science—and the core curriculum is infused in the arts.
This is the fifth year that REAMS has offered tuition-free all-day, every-day kindergarten, to ensure that all students have equal access to early education.
Piano lessons are integrated into all third and fourth grade classes. Research shows that the benefits that children acquire from learning to play the piano include higher math scores, enhanced memory, increased coordination, better self-discipline and improved concentration and focus.
Rockford Middle School-Center for Environmental Studies is in its fourth year as a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) magnet school for students in grades five through eight. Students enjoy a bold curriculum that teaches these standards through experimental learning.
The core of the magnet program is developed around the unique learning opportunities available through the environment. The school established two outdoor classrooms developed a rain garden and is taking advantage of a DNR-certified forest. RMS-CES students learn about the connections between humans and nature, the importance of a healthy lifestyle and what it means to be a steward of the environment.
All middle school teachers are Project Learning Tree certified. This curriculum focuses on increasing students understanding of our environment; stimulating critical and creative thinking; and developing students ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues.
Rockford High School offers rigorous college-prep courses, as well as curriculum designed to develop critical-thinking skills for students in grades 9-12. RHS offers College in the Schools (CIS) classes, Advanced Placement courses and Project Lead the Way classes. Graduation requirements are rigorous with eight credits (one credit equals one trimester) in language arts, science, social studies and mathematics.
Rockford High School is committed to making students college and career ready with additional programs through Best Prep, AVID, and the Wright Technical Center. Students attending Rockford High School are required to complete four years of math, science, social studies and English for graduation, as well as a senior seminar course for college and career preparation skills. Additional new course offerings for Rockford High School elective include Business and Computer Technology options.
Rockford Area Schools offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities and sports for students in grades 7-12 to participate in throughout the school year. About 68% of grade 7-12 students participate in at least one extracurricular activity, with 45% participating in two or more. Athletic activity offerings include: cross country, soccer, cheerleading football, volleyball, dance team, basketball, hockey, gymnastics, wrestling, baseball, softball, golf and track & field. Fine Arts and other activity offerings include: Band, Choir, Equestrian Club, Future Farmers of America, Mock Trail, Nation Honor Society, Play, Robotics, Speech, Student Council, Trapshooting, Webcasting and Yearbook. Community Members are always welcome to attend athletic and fine arts events, and to also check out the upgraded facilities, both inside and out, in all of the Rockford Area Schools buildings.

Rockford Area Schools Community Education offers a variety of adult enrichment and health and wellness classes. All adults are encouraged to expand their horizons, hone their talents, or be introduced to a new hobby or skill; helping to build a community for lifelong learning. Rockford Area Schools Community Education youth programs offer a wide variety of youth enrichment classes as well as sports and recreation activities to expand all local children’s learning and athletic experiences. The youth enrichment classes encourage students to engage, participate, wonder, explore, grow, learn and have fun in a safe environment. The youth sports and recreation programs provide our local youth with a positive introduction to athletics and sports and recreation programs.
Rockford Area Schools Community Education department schedules district facilities before and after school hours, on the weekends, holidays and during the summer months. District facilities have become home to programs offered by many different organizations, involving athletics, music, theatre, dance, local service organizations and more. Community members of all ages can utilize their public school facilities for lifelong learning and programs that greatly enhance the quality of life in our area.
The Galaxy Kids School Age Care Program provides year-round child care with flexible care options for students in preschool through sixth grade. Galaxy Kids works with teaching staff to offer programs that enhance and reinforce children’s educational experience. The Galaxy Kids summer program also offers special theme day activities and field trips.
Rockford Area Schools Early Childhood Programs offer comprehensive support to children and families during the early years. At Rockford Area Schools ECFE, parents are offered educational support for the healthy growth and development of their children as well as to strengthen families. The year-round programs include affordable classes, special events and fieldtrips. The Launching Pad Preschool program, offered through Rockford Area Schools Early Childhood programs, offers half-day and full-day options for children ages three to five years. Launching Pad Preschool offers a Reggio-inspired approach to education, considered by many to be the best in the world. The Launching Pad Preschool was awarded a 4-star rating from Parent Aware, the highest offered. It reflects a commitment to high-quality programming using researched-based best practices, while preparing children for success in kindergarten and beyond.
