In 1907 Lake Nokomis was very shallow, only 5 feet to be exact. Much of the lake was marshland and a drainage area for the neighborhood. It was dredged to produce the current 204 acre lake with a max depth of 33 feet. Today, Lake Nokomis is one of three sailing lakes (along with Harriet and Calhoun) in the Minneapolis park system that offers many enjoyable recreational opportunities. In the summer months, sailboat races are a weekend event. Named winner of 2008 ‘Best Place to Get Away from it All Without Leaving Town- Canoeing on Lake Nokomis’ write up in City Pages, “Best of the Twin Cities”. With two supervised beaches, a community center, sailboat and canoe racks, concessions, walking pathways and ball diamonds, this community is enjoyable for all ages.
